.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAF FREDRIK PET- TERSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Stockholm, in Sweden, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pro tectors forPocket-Books,Purses,and the Like, (for which I'have obtained Letters Patent in Sweden under date of April 20, 1889, No. 1,964,) of which the following'is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to a device adapted to serve as a means for preventing a pocketbook, purse, card-case, or the like from falling out of or being surreptitiously abstracted from the pocket of a garment.

The primary objects of my invention are to provide a device of this character which can be conveniently attached to and worn within the pocket of a garment, to provide such a device which will be neat in construction and will occupy but little room within the pocket, and, finally, to provide such a device which can be readily adjusted to accommodate pocket-books, purse-s, or the like of various sizes; and with these objects in view the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts, all as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device on an enlarged scale. Fig.

2 is a side view thereof, showingin dotted lines apurse clasped therein. Fig. 3 is a plan view.

A indicates a fiat plate of metal, which may have the shape shown or any other suitable shape, said plate being provided with the transverse slits or' openings at near its lower end, the longitudinal opening a near its upper end, the intermediate longitudinal depression or groove C, and the struck-up portions forming eyes a on each side of the openings 0/, all as clearly shown.

vB indicates a thin flexible metallic strip or plate bent at one end to form a hook I). Said strip or plate is adapted to be attachedto the lower end of the plateAin any suitable manner, though in the drawings I have shown it as being attached by passing its rectilinear portion through the slits or openings a, the

flexibility of the strip or plate being such asto allow it to be so attached and to hold it with a suflicient degree of firmness to prevent it becoming accidentally detached from the plate A.

It will be seen that by the described mode of attachment of the plate B the same may be adjusted longitudinally of the plate A by sliding it within the slits a, and thereby adapt the device to purses or pocket-books of various sizes, as will presently appear.

G indicates a metallicplate curved as shown more plainly in Fig. 2 and provided at its upper edge with a loop or eye for the reception of a pivot-pin g, which is passed therethrough and through the eyes a of the plate A, whereby said plate G is pivoted to said plate A. v

The pocket-book, purse, card-case, or the like which is to be protected by the device is adapted to be held or confined between the plates B G, which thereby serve as retaining devices for the same. As will be seen in pocket-book or the like is confined by the plate G, while its lower edge is confined with in the book?) of the plate B.

In order that the upper retaining device or plate may exert sufficient pressure upon the purse to prevent it falling out of a pocket or being surreptitiously abstracted therefrom without the notice of the person, any suitable arrangement of spring or springs may be adopted. ment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein I employ a coiled spring D, one end of which is .hookedto a lug or eye E upon the rear face of the plate A and itsother end hooked toan arm E, attached to the rear face of the plate G near its upper end, said spring D when in position lying partially within the groove 0 in the plate A. It will thus be. seen that by means of the coiled spring a constant stress is exerted upon the plate G to hold it in its normal position. (Shown in Fig. 2.)

To increase the stress of the spring on the plate G when the latter is in its said normal position,I bend the plate A rearwardly at its upper end, as shown at c whereby to bring the center of the pivot-pin g farther from the I, however, prefer the arrange-v point of attachment of the spring to the arm on said plate, and in order that said spring may exert a stress upon the plate when in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to maintain it in that position until the purse has been placed within the device or removed therefrom, I provide the arm E with a hook E whereby when the plate is thrown upward the upper end of the spring will be held from sliding off the arm by said hook, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2.

To adapt the device to be attached to the lining of a pocket, any suitable means that will preferably be concealed from view may be employed-as, for instance, a safety-pin H, attached to the rear face of the plate A at its upper end.

When it is desired to place a pocket-book or the like within the device, the upper plate G is thrown upwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and will be held in that position bythe stress of the spring until the pocket-book or other article is laid against the plate A, with its lower edge within the hook I) of plate 13, when said plate G is pushed downward, and, owing to the stress of the s pring,will hold the pocket-book firmly clasped in position. By throwing the plate G upward, as before, the pocket-book can be readily removed.

. What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The herein-described protector for pocketbooks, purses, and the like, consisting in the combinatiomwith a suitable plate adapted to be attached to a garment, of an upper retaining device carried by the plate and a lower retaining device carried by said plate and adjustable longitudinally thereon, as described, for the purpose specified.

2. The herein-described protector for pocketbooks, purses, and the like, the same consisting in the combination, with the plate A, provided with the transverse slits or openings a near its lower end and the eyes a near its upper end, of the lower fiat retaining device B, provided with the hook I) andhaving its rectilinear portion passed through the slits a, and the upper curvedretaining device G, pivoted upon a pin passing through the eyes a as described.

3. The herein-described protector for pocketbooks, purses, and the like, the same consisting in the combination,with the plate A, provided with the transverse slits or openings 0- near its lower end, the' eye or lug E, the longitudinal depression or groove 0, the longitudinal opening a near the upper end of said plate, and the eyes a on each side of said opening, of the lower retaining device B,having its rectilinear portion passed through the slits, the upper retaining device G, pivoted upon a pin passed through the eyes and provided with an arm E upon its rear face projecting through the opening a, and the coiled 6;

spring D, having one end attached to the eye or lug and its other end attached to the arm E, as described.

4. The herein-described protector forpocketbooks, purses, and the like, the same consisting in the combinatiomwith' the plate A, hav in g its upper end bent rearwardly,as described, said plate being provided with thetransverse slits or openings a near its lower end,the eye or lug E, the longitudinal groove 0, the opening a near its upper end, and the eyes a on each side of said opening, of the lower retaining device B, having itsrectilinear portion passed through the slits, the upper retaining device G, pivoted upon a pin passed through the eyes andprovided with the arm E, projecting through the opening a and having the hook E and the coiled spring D, having one end attached to the eye and its other end attached to the arm at a point forward of and below the center of the pivot-pin of the retaining device G, as specified.
