Abstract

1,187,046. Inking apparatus. WINDMOLLER & HOLSCHER. 8 June, 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 26449/67. Heading B6C. Inking apparatus includes means for recirculating surplus ink that has been fed into the nip between a ductor roller and an inkapplying roller. Fig. 2 is a section of a flexographic printing machine including printing cylinder 1 carrying a plate 2 inked by an applicator roller (5) which engages a ductor roller 4 dipping in an ink sump 15. An inclined plate 9, partially conforming to the surface curvature of the ductor roller 4; is mounted above the roller 4 and carries raised limiting strips 10 (10<SP>1</SP>), (also Fig. 3, not shown) at those edges which are parallel to the end faces of the rollers, these strips serving to contain ink on the upper surface of plate 9 and direct it back into the sump 18. Deflecting plates (6, 6<SP>1</SP>), (Figs. 1, 3 not shown) provided with wedge-shaped extensions 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, enclose the nip at the ends and prevent lateral escape of ink. Thus, surplus ink at the nip is forced upwards through the gap between roller 5 and plate 9, and is recirculated back into the sump 18. The plate 9 may be provided with a liquid-repellent surface.
