Abstract

589,220. Printing-surfaces ; stereotype matrices. HOLE, E. S. March 20, 1945. No. 7023. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Flexible printing-plates and matrices are moulded from one or more sheets of unsized paper impregnated with tbermo-setting mouldable material backed by a' relatively thick layer of vulcanizable material, the latter being vulcanized while taking an impression from the mould in the impregnated paper under heat and pressure. The impregnated material may be that sold under the name holite, and the backing may be synthetic rubber, rubber substitute, or natural rubber treated to resist the action of oils : the material sold under the name neoprene is given as an example of a rubber-substitute. The backing may be from 1/16 in. to # in. thick, and in an example, a backing of about 1/12 in. is used with impregnated material up to 0.02 in. thick. The rubber may be subjected to partial pre-vulcanization, the composite material may be backed with millboard, paper, canvas, fabric or vulcanized rubber, and the moulded plates may be mounted on wood or metal bases, or backed with a heat-softening adhesive fabric as described in Specification 551,371, [Group VIII].
