Abstract

648,863. Metal containers with flexible linings. LEER, W. VAN. Dec. 17, 1947. Nos. 33366/47 and 17228/48. [Classes 21 and 66] A metal container e.g. a drum, barrel, or tank &c. 1 for corrosive liquids, powders or foodstuffs &c. has a lining 14 of rubber, Synthetic rubber, or polyvinyl chloride &c. which may be reinforced by textile or other filaments or fabrics, and which has a resilient, flanged neck, the container having provision-e.g. a vent 10 at one or both ends-for exhausting or letting out air from the space 21 between the container 1 and the lining 14 so that the latter fits tightly against the inside surfaces of the container 1. The lining 14 may be inserted through the filling opening 5 and secured by a grommet 16 and a cover-plate 9 bolted on at 8 and having a screwthreaded bung 20. The lining 14 may then be inflated or expanded, and the vents 10 &c. are then closed and may be sealed by solder. The lining may be readily detachable for re-use. In modifications, the grommet is dispensed with : a flexible vent tube, e.g. with openings in its walls, located between the lining 14 and the shell 1 conveys air from the bottom &c. to the vent 10: and a vent tube leads through the lining 14 to the filling opening 5 and after use, it is sealed off and tucked in.
