Abstract

882,399. Pouring spouts for containers; stoppers; venting-apparatus. RIEKE METAL PRODUCTS CORPORATION. July 23, 1958 [Feb. 17, 1958], No. 23669/58. Classes 21, 66 and 125(3). A pouring spout for a container 10 comprises a tubular body 12, a sleeve 27 forming a vent between its wall and the wall of the body 12 through which air can pass in to the container and a flange 28 on the sleeve having spaced apertures 31 permitting direct communication between the vent and the interior of the container so that, on pouring liquid out, a differential pressure is created between the vent and the interior of the sleeve and the liquid will flow smoothly. Tongues 29 on the sleeve are rigidly secured to the wall of a tubular extension 13 of the body 12 leaving a space between the upper edge 33 of the sleeve and the inner end of the extension 13. The spout is retractable and is preferably of resilient material. e.g. polyethylene or rubber composition ; it is held on the container by means of a sealing ring 15 which embraces a flange 11 on the container and is secured by a clamping member 16. A diaphragm 19 is cut out before the spout is used; and a cap 20 is provided with a bail handle 23 for pulling the spout to its extended position. The clamping member 16 has a recess 17 for receiving a tamper-proof metallic cap 18. In a modification, the spout has a tubular body with an internal sleeve rigidly attached to the body at its inner end and both members are of a rigid material, e.g. sheet steel, and are slidable in a central opening in a cap member, Fig. 5 (not shown). A further closure is applied when the spout is retracted. The inner end of the tubular body is flared and has spaced notches which provide openings between the vent and container interior.
