A combined pouring spout and closure member for a container having an opening 14 comprises a tubular pouring spout 17 slidable in the opening, a plug 19 secured to the spout to close the outer end thereof, a closure membrane 23, 24 integral with and severable from the plug 19 and extending outwardly therefrom and means 35, 36 embracing the membrane. On assembling this device in the opening 14 of a filled container an internally threaded flange 29 having a lip 30, a neck 32, and a sealing ring 34 is placed over the neck 15 of the opening 14. The spout 17 which like the flange 29 is made of a yielding and compressible material is then pressed into the opening, the neck 32 stretching to permit the passage of the shoulder 26 and flange 27 at the lower end of the spout, and is screwed into place, being threaded at 21 on the outside of the plug 19. The membrane 23, 24 now encloses the lip 30 and a clamping ring 35 is placed over it and crimped into place, Fig. 2. This arrangement seals the container which is opened by cutting the membrane 23 at 33. The spout is unscrewed from the flange 29 which is now fixed to the container and the shoulder 26 and flange 27 of the spout are engaged with the neck 32 to dispose the spout in its pouring position, a pouring opening 25 adjacent the plug 19 being exposed. A vent slot 37, 37a is provided in the spout at the opposite side from the pouring hole.
