Abstract
648,062. Electric melting furnaces. ERIKSSON, K. E., DREYFUS, L., and ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AKTIEBOLAGET. Nov. 16, 1948, No. 29732. [Class 39(iii)] The molten bath of an electric melting furnace is stirred by eddy currents induced therein by one or more magnetic systems, each system comprising two or more poles mounted beneath the bottom of the furnace and caused to rotate about axes the extensions of which would pass through the charge. According to one construction, Fig. 3, the magnetic system comprises several poles arranged in alternate polarity on a ring 5 rotating about an axis eccentric to the axis of the furnace 6, the poles preferably passing beneath the central portion of the furnace. The ring 5 may, however, be concentric with the furnace. Alternatively Fig. 5, the construction may comprise two or more rotary magnetic systems arranged such that the poles 16 and 17 of one system gear into the pole-gaps of the poles 11 and 12 of the adjacent system. The furnace bottom is of spherical form and is covered by a sheet 8 of non-magnetic material. The air gap between the furnace bottom and the pole piecer is approximately constant. The magnets may be electrically energized.
