Abstract

In a process of hardening a surface diffusion layer formed on a parent metal according to Specification 635,595 a hardening element having a small atomic diameter is incorporated to form hard interstitial solutions within the surface diffusion layer. The parent metal may be iron or an iron alloy and the surface may have Ti, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, or W diffused into it. The hardening elements may be C, N, B or Si and carbon, for example, may be added to steel having a diffusion layer of tungsten by heating to p above the Ac3 point (908 DEG C) in an atmosphere of hydrogen containing 8 per cent by volume of a mixture of 80 per cent propane and 20 per cent butane for 4 to 8 hours. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 included also the use of titanium as a hardening element. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
