Abstract
An alloy steel resistant to oxidation at high temperature is formed by casting a melt of the composition: .C.0,095 - 0,35.per cent .Si.1,5 - 5,0.per cent .Al.0,1 - 5,0.per cent .Fe, and the usual impurities, the.. .remainder.. and subjecting the casting to hot or cold working, e.g. at about 1100 DEG C., or to a homogenising treatment, e.g. in the range 1050-1100 DEG C., or both. The alloy may also include one or more of the elements Mn up to 3,0 per cent, Ni up to 5,0 per cent, Cr up to 2,0 per cent, Mo up to 1,0 per cent, the last three elements being present only if Al is in the range 0,75-5,0 per cent, S may be present up to 0,03 per cent or, if Mn is included, up to 0,05 per cent. Oxidation resistance may be improved by heating the rolled sheet in hydrogen containing water vapour which oxidises the Si and Al at the surface. The Provisional Specification describes also alloys containing C 0,01-0,8 per cent, Si 1,5-5,0 per cent with or without Al up to 5,0 per cent.
