Abstract
647,505. Thermal switches. TAYLOR, J. L., and TAYLOR, A. E. Nov. 13, 1948, No. 30184/47. [Class 38(v)] [Also in Group XXI] A thermal switch, in a system (see Group XXI) for indicating whether the temperature of a fluid in a pipe or tank is too high or low, comprises two bimetal spirals 21 secured at their outer ends to a bar 20 on a flange 18 adapted to be fixed over an orifice in the pipe so that the spirals are immersed in the fluid. The inner ends of the spirals are fixed to a shaft 23 carrying a cam 25 cooperating with a roller 30 normally engaging a low part of the cam. Rotation of the shaft 23 in either direction due to expansion or contraction of the spirals causes the roller to move on to a high part of cam 25, thereby rocking a lever 29 about its pivot 35 to separate contacts 37, 38 and make 37, 39, a snap-action being given by an armature 32 cooperating with a magnet 33. The cam is adjustably secured on a sleeve 90 which is itself secured to shaft 23 by means of a part 45 having a pin 44 engaging the sleeve, the part 45 being secured to the shaft by a screw 95. Shaft 23 can also be rotated manually by means, not shown, for test purposes.
