Abstract

644,063. Thermal switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HUMPHREY, R., and HUNT, M. H. Aug. 15, 1947, No. 22737. [Class 38(v)] [Also in Group XIII] Relates to a thermo stat comprising a temperature - respon sive capsule having a diaphragm 5 upon which bears an annular or interruptec annular flange 12, of a pressure member 9 which bears on the diaphragm, at a distance approximately midway between the centre and periphery thereof, with variable pressure to adjust the temperature at which the diaphragm snaps over its dead-centre position. According to the invention, in such a device e.g. for a refrigerator, a leaf spring 23 carrying a member 26 for bridging a pair. of switch contacts 21, and having a button 25, bears on the centre of the diaphragm with constant pressure. The leaf spring passes through slots, Fig. 3, in the flange 12 or, in a modification, through a hole in the cylindrical part 11 of the pressure member. Adjustment of the pressure of this member is by means of a compression spring 15 and a nut 18 movable on a threaded, rotatable spindle 14 but restrained from rotation by a lug 19 engaging a slot. A projection 28 from the cylinder 11 is provided which bears on the leaf spring 23 to ensure breaking of the contacts when the diaphragm snaps downwardly and when a cam 30. rotated by the spindle 14 depresses a pin 31 for a definite " off " position. The diaphragm 5 is of precipitation-hardened beryllium copper about 0.006 .inch thick and is actuated by the saturated vapour pressure of a liquid which fills the capsule and capillary pilot tube 7 at normal temperature.
