Abstract

867,037. Mercury switches; thermal switches; magnetic switches. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. Dec. 16, 1957 [April 26, 1957], No. 39079/57. Class 38 (5). A magnetically-operated mercury switch comprises a hermeticallysealed housing 12, 14 containing an iron ring 32 floating on mercury 30 and additionally supported by a spring washer 36. A permanent magnet 42 is mounted on a lever of any condition responsive device, for example a bimetallic strip 40. When magnet 42 approaches the bottom of the housing the ring 32 is attracted with a snap-action and forces mercury 30 into the narrow chamber 20 to bridge two contacts 22. An adjustable stop 44 serves to control the differential of the switch. It is stated that owing to the almost hemi-spherical surface of mercury 30 in the chamber 20 the switch will junction at angles up to 45 degrees from the vertical.
