Abstract
1290991 Thermal switches; fluid Contacts HONEYWELL Inc 19 April 1971 [23 April 1970] 22474/71 Heading H1N An electric switch comprising a globule 18, Fig. 3, of mercury movable in an envelope 12 by tilting, contains a projecting member 16 engageable with and depressing the surface of the globule 18 whereby surface tension produces a restoring force R acting in the direction to prevent the mercury from engaging a fixed contact 14 when the envelope 12 is slightly tilted (as shown), the contact 14 being engaged only when the envelope 12 is further tilted. The arrangement is such that both the switching on and switching off positions are reached without the envelope 12 reaching and passing over the horizontal position whereby only a small change in the position of the centre of gravity of the globule 18 and only a small differential for the switch is obtained. In a particular example the envelope is mounted on a bimetal spiral coil (20), Figs. 6, 7 (not shown) for use as a thermal switch. The arrangement is such that the mercury globule does not move across the central support for the coil (20) so that the thermal switch with a low differential is obtained.
