Abstract

Cellular articles are produced by heating without pressure a vulcanizable mixture of peat with a natural, synthetic, regenerated, or reclaimed rubber, until the mix expands with the formation of cells, and thereafter continuing the heating with application of pressure to vulcanize the mix. In typical examples, rubber, optionally with reclaimed rubber, is mixed with peat, zinc oxide, plasticizers, accelerators and sulphur and heated in a mould without pressure at 140 DEG C. pressure is then applied and the mixture heated to 152 DEG C. for seven minutes to complete vulcanization.
