Abstract

269,693. Stevens, H. P. Jan. 28, 1926. Vulcanizing; indiarubber, attaching to other articles.-Vulcanite is produced by heating a mixture of rubber other than latex, a high proportion of sulphur, and a substantial quantity of a powerful accelerator at a low temperature for aprolonged period. Several examples are given, of which the following is typical : - 100 parts of crepe rubber, 75 parts of flowers of sulphur, 20 parts of zinc oxide, 5 parts of zinc dithiocarbonate, vulcanized at 100‹ C. for 24 hours. Mixtures of accelerators, particularly those containing an accelerator active at a low temperature such as zinc propyl xanthate may also be employed. The process is suitable for coating articles with vulcanite, for example as described in Specification 248,021, or the rubber may be applied as solution, two solutions preferably being made, one containing rubber and sulphur, and the other, rubber and accelerator, and mixed immediately before use or applied in layers.
