Abstract

Latex, treating; vulcanizing. - A solution or colloid suspension of vulcanized rubber in water is obtained by submitting latex to vulcanization with sulphur or the like under such conditions that coagulation is precluded. The latex must be rendered alkaline to inhibit coagulation by the addition of alkali as ammonia, or a base as piperidine, or by the use of a vulcanizing-agent such as an alkaline polysulphide. Coagulation may also be prevented by dilution of the latex, or by the addition of a colloid as casein, which also renders the final product less liable to be tacky. Several examples are given in the Specification, of which the following is typical :-1.6 ccm. of ammonia is added to 100 ccm. of latex containing about 30 per cent of rubber, and a cream consisting of 3 gm. of sulphur, 1 gm. of zinc oxide, 1 ccm. of piperidine in 35 ccm. of water is added. The whole is placed in a vulcanizer and vulcanized, half an hour rise to 40 lbs., and half-anhour at 40 lbs., and the liquid is strained. Coagulation may be effected by the addition of an acid, or by evaporation of the liquid, and the coagulum may be washed, milled, sheeted &c. Articles may be coated with the liquid and dried, or sheets made by building up films. Fillers, dyes &c. may be added at any stage. Specification 18497/10 is referred to.
