Abstract

In tyre covers using plastic products obtained by the polymerization of butadiene, as described in Specification 299,037, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], solutions of those products of like concentration in the same solvent but of different viscosities are used for the different parts of the tyre, such as the side walls and tread. In general, for the body portion of the tyre solutions of low viscosity are used, solutions of relatively high viscosity being used for the tread to withstand attrition &c. The following examples are given of suitable compositions to be used for the different parts of the tyre. (1) For the body portion, the cord fabric of the casing is calendered with a composition consisting of a 3 per cent solution in cyclohexane of 100 parts of a polymerized butadiene prepared according to Specification 324,004, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], this solution having a relative viscosity of 40, 60 parts of American gas black, 7 parts of stearic acid, 2 parts of resin according to Specification 233,322, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], 1 part of sulphur, and 1,2 parts of piperidine-piperidyl-dithio-carbamate. For the tread portion, a 3 per cent solution in cyclohexane of a polymerized butadiene prepared according to Specification 324,004, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], but having a relative viscosity of 1000 is mixed with the same ingredients as used for the body portion. (2) The body portion is first coated with a 3 per cent solution of the polymerized butadiene (prepared according to Specification 340,474, [Group IV]), having a relative viscosity of 50 mixed with 55 parts of gas black, 3 parts of resin according to Specification 323,322, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], 7 parts of stearic acid, 3 parts of zinc oxide, 1,5 parts of sulphur, 0,6 part of diphenyl guanidine, 0,4 part of mercaptobenzothiazole, and 0,6 part of hexenyl-piperidine. An intermediate under-tread portion, next applied, consists of a similar 3 per cent solution of the polymerized butadiene but having a relative viscosity of 25, and the same other ingredients as used for the body portion. For the tread portion, 100 parts of the polymerized butadiene solution having a relative viscosity of 600 are mixed with 7 parts of stearic acid, 7 parts of resin according to Specification 323,322, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], 70 parts of gas black, 1 part of sulphur, and 1,3 parts of piperidine piperidyl-dithio-carbamate. In both examples, the vulcanization is carried out for 90 minutes at 140 DEG C.
