Abstract
A method of manufacturing vulcanized rubber articles from latex comprises compounding latex with sulphur, a gelling agent and a vulcanizing accelerator comprising a mixture of water insoluble metal salts of at least two different di-N-substituted dithiocarbamic acids, shaping the latex and subjecting it to vulcanizing conditions. In Examples, a mix is made from a dispersion of sulphur, zinc oxide and natural rubber latex and then before the mix is caused to coagulate in moulds by the addition of sodium silicofluoride, or aqueous suspension of mixed accelerators according to the invention is added. This mixture consists of two zinc salts chosen from those of the following: dimethyl-dithiocarbamate, diethyl-dithiocarbamate, dibutyl-dithiocarbamate, methyl-phenyl-dithiocarbamate, ethyl-phenyl-dithiocarbamate, pentamethylene-dithiocarbamate, lupetidinedithiocarbamate, and dimethylaminomethylene dimethyl-dithiocarbamate. About 1 per cent of the mixed dithiocarbamates may be added and other accelerators such as mercaptobenzthiasoles may also be added. The mixture may be utilized in the manufacture of sponge rubber.
