Abstract
Natural rubber latex is vulcanized by adding to it vulcanizing agents in a quantity less than 1 per cent. by weight of the dry rubber content of the latex, and then vulcanizing. The vulcanizing agents may comprise sulphur, in the elementary form, or combined as polysulphides or dithiocarbamates and zinc oxide or similarly acting zinc compounds. After vulcanization, the latex may be used in the manufacture of balloons which may be printed by a stamping process. In Examples, the vulcanizing agent comprises two or more substances from colloidal sulphur, zinc dibutyl dithiocarbamate, the sodium salt of the condensation product of b -naphthalene sulphonic acid with formaldehyde; zinc oxide, tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, o-tolyl biguanide, zinc dimethyl dithiocarbamate, cyclohexylethylamine salt of cyclohexylethyl dithiocarbamic acid, zinc phenylethyl dithiocarbamate, piperidine salt of pentamethylene dithiocarbamic acid, zinc diethyl dithiocarbamate, dibutylamine, mercaptobenzthiazole and diorthotolylguanidine. After vulcanization, which may be effected at air temperature for some days, or at temperatures of 50 to 75 DEG C., unused vulcanizing agents may be removed by a centrifuge.
