Abstract
A composition comprises a butadiene-styrene copolymer and hollow microglobular silica (see Group III), preferably in the form of particles of between 300 and 600 millimicrons diameter. Paraffin wax, stearic acid, coumarone resin, zinc oxide, mercapto-benzthiazole, diphenyl guanidine and sulphur may be added and the composition vulcanized.ALSO:Hollow microglobular silica which may be used as a filler for natural and synthetic rubbers (see Groups IV (a) and V), is made by reducing silicious material such as clay with carbon at a temperature of 3600-4000 DEG F. in a furnace in a hydrogen atmosphere followed by quenching of the vapour with steam and rapid cooling.ALSO:A composition comprises natural or synthetic rubber and hollow microglobular silica which may be obtained according to the method described in Group III. The silica may be added in the proportion of 10 to 400 parts by weight to 100 parts of rubber and is preferably in the form of particles of between 300 and 600 millimicrons diameter. In an example, 50 parts of such silica is added to a composition consisting of 100 parts of butadiene-styrene copolymer, and paraffin wax, stearic acid, coumarone resin, zinc oxide, mercaptobenzthiazole, diphenyl guanidine and sulphur.
