Abstract
Silica in the form of finely divided amorphous spherical particles is obtained by the oxidation of silicon or silicon monoxide in the vapour phase. The silica is preferably made as a bye-product in the manufacture of ferrosilicon by the reaction of excess silica, carbon and iron in a furnace under which conditions silicon is volatilised and oxidised.ALSO:Silica obtained by the oxidation of silicon or silicon monoxide in the vapour phase is used as a compounding ingredient in natural and synthetic rubber compositions. The silica is preferably obtained in the form of finely divided amorphous spherical porticles as a bye-product in the manufacture of ferrosilicon. In an example, 100 parts of a butadiene-styrene copolymer, 5 parts processing oil, 5 parts of zinc oxide, 2 parts sulphur, 1.5 parts of mercaptobenzthiazole, 50 parts of silica prepared according to the above method are calendered and cured at 280 DEG F.
