Abstract
1 : 4 Dihydrazio-phthalazines are obtained by the action of hydrazine on a functional biscarboxyl derivative of a benzene-ortho-dicarboxylic acid in which at least one of the functionally converted carboxyl groups is a thioamide group and the other is free from oxo groups. The thioamide group or groups may be formed in the reaction from the nitrile in presence of H2S or an agent liberating it. In an example, phthalonitrile is treated with hydrazine hydrate and carbon disulphide to give 1 : 4 dihydrazinphthalazine, via the intermediately-formed bis-thioamide. The aromatic nucleus may be further substituted.
