Abstract

A batch of boron carbide, of use as a moulding powder, with boron/carbon molar ratio between 3.80 and 3.90 is made by a selected combination of lots of crude boron carbide with 98 per cent boron or carbon and a boron/carbon molar ratio between 3.65 and 4.05. This bath can be ground to desired particle size and treated with concentrated sulphuric acid, especially when grinding with iron balls, so that final iron content is less than 0.1 per cent and total boron and carbon of at least 99 per cent. A suitable molding powder, which has been thus selected, comminuted and cleaned contains 80-90 per cent of particle size from 5-50 microns; less than 12 per cent under 5 microns and none over 100 microns.
