Description

PROCESS OF MANUFACTURING GRINDING-TOOLS Original Filed May 15, 1934 bond for diamond particles. It has been found I that charcoal'hasa beneficial efi'ect apart from iron oxide as indicated from results obtained with wheels A and B, whose constituents are given below, the constituents being given as per cent.
pa Char W monds a Bond :2: coal A m m 48 O B 10 22 all 3a 10 The wheel B differed principaiiy'from the wheel A in that part of the fillers was replaced by .charcoal in an amount sumcient to illustrate the valugo able characteristics imparted by it. The grinding efiiciency of wheel B was nearly twice as great as that of wheel A. Neither wheel A nor wheel B contained substantial amounts of iron oxide.
The cutting rate of the wheel containing charcoal was also considerably greater than that of the wheel that did not contain charcoal.
1. A process of making abrasive bodies, com- L prising mixing together approximately by weight 'go 50 parts of pulverized charcoal, 50 parts of graphite, '15 parts of ferric oxide, 26 parts oi diamond powder, some powdered artificial resin and a relatively large quantity of liquid artificial V resin, heating the mi'xtureto about 212 7 F. to
'35 form a homogeneous paste, introducing the paste into a mold, and mbiecting the same to pressurewhile hot to form a unitary body.
2. A grinding body comprising diamond particles, graphite and-ferric oxide bonded into a unitary mass by anartificial resin.
3. A grinding body comprising diamond particles, graphite, powderedcharcoal and ferric ox- 'ide bonded into a unitary mass by an artificial resin. v
4. A grindingbody comprising abrasive grains,
graphite, powdered charcoal and ferric oxide bonded into a unitary body by an artificial resin. I 5. A grinding body comprising approximately by weight 50 parts of pulverized charcoal, 50 partsof graphite, 75 parts of ferric oxide and 26 parts of diamond powder bonded together by an artificial resin.
6. A grinding body comprising diamond particles, graphite and colcothar bonded into a unitary mass by an artificial resin.
7. A grinding body comprising approximately by weight 50 parts of pulverized charcoal, 50 parts of graphite, 75 parts of colcothar and 26 parts of diamond powder bonded together by an artificial resin.
