Abstract

479,703. Metal bonded abrasives. NORTON GRINDING WHEEL CO., Ltd. (Norton Co.) Dec. 15, 1936, No. 34405. [Class 70] An abrasive body is made by mixing hard grain such as diamond or boron carbide with powdered metal or metal alloy having a melting point of 1400‹ C., or less, or with the ingredients of such an alloy, and forming a bond by heat and pressure. The bonding material may consist of a mixture of aluminium and silicon powders, or of a powdered alloy thereof. Wheels may be made by packing the mixed powdered constituents in a space 10 in a mould composed of annuli 2, 3 and 4 and a core-piece 7, all of graphite, which is heated in an electric furnace 13 in an inert or reducing atmosphere. Heat and pressure may be applied simultaneously, or the article may be first pressed and then heated. The mould may afterwards be quenched. Thin annuli of the abrasive may be united as by brazing, soldering or welding, to discs of aluminium or other metal. Specifications 479,789 and 479,790 are referred to.
