Abstract

516,475. Abrasive articles. CARBORUNDUM CO. June 27, 1938, No. 19051. Convention date, June 28, 1937. [Class 60] [Also in Groups V and II] Abrasive articles comprise abrasive grains and a sintered metal bond consisting of silver or silver alloy. In producing the articles the abrasive grains are mixed with silver powder, or with the previously alloyed material in a powdered form or with the component metals in powdered form. The mix is then pressed into a dense mass and the mass sintered with or without the application of pressure. A grinding wheel in which the periphery is composed of an abrasive composition containing diamonds and the inner portion of the wheel is composed of an abrasive composition not containing diamonds is made by separating a cylindrical mould into an inner and outer compartment with a cylindrical paper separator, filling the compartments with the appropriate composition, removing the paper separator and compressing and sintering the mass. The Specification describes the production of abrasive wheels by mounting 'a ring 12, 13 of metal bonded abrasive material on the base 14 of thermoplastic resin. or, metal ; the ring 12, 13 may comprise an outer ring 12 containing' diamonds and silica carbide and an inner ring 13 containing silica carbide only as the abrasive material. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the production of the abrasive articles by shaping the abrasive grains with a temporary binder, surrounding the article with solid silver or silver alloy and heating under vacuum or reduced pressure until the metal melts and permeates the pores of the article. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
