Abstract

A raw batch mixture for the manufacture of a bonded abrasive article comprises abrasive grains, an organic bonding agent and a particulate, friable, pore-forming material, said poreforming material consisting essentially of olivine. Insert or active fibres and/or other modifying agents may be present. The mix may be subjected to pressure in a mould to form an abrasive body, heat-treated to mature the bond and dressed in accordance with conventional practice. The olivine may comprise 3-20% by volume of the moulded body and may have particle size from - 4 + 16 mesh (U.S. Standard Sieve). The abrasive may be silicon carbide, aluminium oxide, zirconia, flint, garnet or bauxite or mixtures thereof. The bonding agent may be natural or synthetic resins, including the phenol-formaldehydes, urea-formaldehydes, melamine formaldehydes, epoxides, alkyds, polyesters, modified phenolics, natural and synthetic rubbers or shellac. The filler may be ergolite, iron sulphides, or fluospar in finely divided form.
