Abstract

An abrasive grain has a cylindrical shape with a perpendicular cross-section or controlled geometrical and a perpendicular cross-sectional area of between 500 and 200,000 sq. mils, said grain having a length greater than the maximum width of the cross-section, the configuration of the cross-section being such that the ratio of the square of the peripheral length of the cross-section to the cross-sectional area is between 13: 1 and 100: 1. The grain may have length up to 5 times the maximum width of cross-section. The abrasive grains may be embodied in an abrasive wheel containing from 40 to 60% by volume of hard, abrasive grains, the predominant portion of abrasive grains in the abrasive matrix being of the above configuration. Filler materials may be powdered eryotete and metallic sulphides, while the thermosetting bonding agent may be epoxy resins, and vinyl resins, shellac or rubber. The abrasive grain may comprise alumina, titania, manganese zirconia, bentonite, zirconium silicate, silicon carbide and silicon nitride.
