1,009,840. Grinding wheels. F. W. LINDLAD. Nov. 12, 1962 [Nov. 12, 1962], No. 42706/62. Heading B3D. A grinding-wheel comprises a body 1 rotatable about its central longitudinal axis, a seating 7 surrounding this axis for an abrasive member 9, and a plurality of channels 19 on one surface of the body each channel terminating at the seating 7 whereby the flow of cooling air is accentuated at the region of the seating. The body may be of nylon or moulded from a phenolic compound and it may be of frustoconical shape having at its smaller end a wall 3 with a hole 5 for mounting the wheel on the arbor of a grinding machine. The abrasive ring 9 may also be of plastic moulded material carrying diamond particles therein. The ring 9 is secured by adhesive, e.g. an epoxy resin, to the seating 7 formed with a shoulder 11, Fig. 4, in a plane at right angles to the wheel axis, the portion of the wheel 13 below the seating having a plurality of circumferentially-spaced notches 15 to enable this portion of the body to be sprung inwardly so that the ring 9 may be slipped into position against the shoulder 11. If desired, the inner surface 21 of the body may be provided with vanes 23 which act as fan blades to maintain a stream of air over the surface and across the inner surface of the ring 9 exposed by the notches 15. The ring 9 may be moulded in situ in an alternative construction.
