Abstract

1,080,155. Honing. APPERLEY HONING Ltd. May 11, 1966 [April 28, 1965), No. 17781/65. Heading B3D. A honing mandrel has one or more bearing shoes bonded thereto, e.g. by soldering or brazing, or secured by means of an adhesive. The adhesive may be one which can be loosened when the stone is to be replaced, without damaging the mandrel, by heating or by a solvent or by chemical action. The shoe may be of (a) Hard wearing material such as zinc, phosphor bronze, steel, " Stellite " (Registered Trade Mark), tungsten carbide or synthetic plastic, e.g. nylon; or (b) Non pick-up prone material such as " Tufnol " (Registered Trade Mark) or P.T.F.E.; or (c) Abrasive material such as carborundum. Shoes 15, 15 are secured by adhesive, e.g. epoxy resin, in grooves 14, 14 formed in the body 10 and extending over at least the length of the stone 12. The external surfaces of the shoes may be machined after they have been mounted. In a modification (Fig. 3) the shoes are secured by adhesive to flats formed on the body. In a modification (Fig. 4) each shoe is secured by adhesive in a recess formed with one shoulder lying on the side of the shoe where reaction forces will be generated when the mandrel is rotated.
