Abstract
634,743. Percussive drill bits. MUREX, Ltd., HARD METALS, Ltd., MANNOX, F. C., BROWN, E. T. S., and BERRY, B. E. July 28, 1947, Nos. 20358, 34541 and 34542. [Class 124] A percussive drill bit comprises a body portion of hardened steel, one or more cutting edges of a tough material that is harder than hardened steel, and one or more wear-resisting peripheral surfaces of a material that is even harder than the tough cutting material. The cutting and wear-resisting materials may both consist of one or more carbides of metals of the IV, V or VI Periodic Groups, the former being of coarser grain and with more bonding metal such as cobalt, nickel or iron, than the latter. Alternatively, the wear-resisting material may consist of crushed diamonds in a matrix. As shown in Fig. 1, the wear-resisting material 2 may be below the cutting material 1 and stretch across a diameter of the tip, or it may be in the form of a strip or triangle at one or both ends of the cutting material, Figs. 4 and 7 (not shown). Fig. 10 shows a cutting edge 6 with the wear-resisting material 7 on either side of it. The wear-resisting and cutting portions may be formed in one piece or may be formed independently and brazed in position.
