Abstract

An abrasive composition comprises an abrasive material, 70-85% by weight of a metallic powder having a thermal conductivity of at least 0.500 cal/cm2./cm./sec./ DEG C. at 68 DEG F. and 8-16% by weight organic binder, based on the total weight of the composition. Suitable metals are copper, silver and aluminium, alone, mixed or alloyed. The binder may be a thermosetting resin such as a phenol-formaldehyde, melamine or urea-formaldehyde resin. The abrasive may be diamond, alumina (fused, natural, or sintered, e.g. emery), another abrasive oxide, or a carbide. An abrasive grinding wheel in a preferred embodiment has a core consisting of 80-95% by weight of a metallic powder of the above-prescribed conductivity and 20-5% resin, and a rim consisting of 70-85% by weight metal powder, 8-16% resin and 1-20% abrasive. Furfural may be added as wetting-agent when preparing the core and rim.ALSO:Abrasive wheels which may be used for electrolytic grinding have an abrasive surface comprising a metallic powder having a thermal conductivity of at least 0.500 cal/cm2/cm/sec/ DEG C at 68 DEG F., an abrasive material, and an organic binder, the metallic powder constituting 70-85% and the binder 8-16% of the composition (see Division C4). The metal may be copper, silver, or aluminium, or mixtures or alloys thereof. In tests, a diamond "straight cup" type wheel with copper powder in the core and run is used to grind tungsten carbide at 80 volts and 80 amps and at 10 volts and 115 amps, and an alumina 8" diameter grinding wheel is used to grind stainless steel.
