Abstract
1,225,175. Bonded abrasive article. CARBORUNDUM CO. 10 April, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 17218/68. Heading C4V. [Also in Division C3] A bonded abrasive article consists of abrasive grains bonded with a resin and a filler, the filler containing at least 10 volume per cent of ceramic fibres having a length to diameter ratio of between 3:1 and 500: 1, a maximum length of 5 mm. or less and an average length in the range of 100 microns to 1 mm. Suitable resins are natural and synthetic rubber, shellac, phenolic resins and epoxy resins. The abrasive grit may be silicon carbide, alumina, glass, garnet, quartz, diamonds or mixtures of these. The fibrous materials may be silica, glass, mineral wool, quartz and silicates, such as aluminium silicate. Non-fibrous fillers may also be used such as pyrites, cryolites, common salt and calcium oxide, in an example a raw batch consisted of 54 vol. per cent, 8 grit fused aluminium oxide containing 10% zirconium and 46 vol. per cent of a resin bond consisting of 52 vol. per cent non-modified phenol/novolac and a filler consisting of 54% of glass fibres having a length to diameter ratio of between 3: 1 and 5: 1 and an average length 0À7 and 3 mm. and smaller amounts of pyrites, potassium sulphate, sodium chloride and calcium oxide.
