Abstract
Flaky powders such as are used in powder metallurgy, for paint manufacture or for the magnetic cleaning of grain, are formed by milling a non-flaky granulated material in a ball or oscillator mill in the presence of up to 10 per cent by weight of a volatile liquid which is inert towards the granulated material, for not more than 20 hours. The liquid is preferably in the proportion of from 0.1 to 5 per cent by weight and may be methanol, ethanol, propanol, iso-propanol, carbon tetrachloride, petroleum, benzine or toluene; a lubricant such as a paraffin, stearine or silicone may be dissolved in the volatile liquid. The powder is preferably iron, aluminium, copper or tin. Specific examples are given.
