Abstract

An aluminium paint is produced by abrading a metal powder consisting wholly or mainly of aluminium free from anti-pyrophoric lubricants until any insulating film around the particles is broken down sufficiently to allow electrical conductivity in the dried paint film, the abrading being carried out under conditions such that an insulating film is not re-established, and incorporating the powder in a paint medium. Preferably, the abrading comprises grinding in a ball mill or the like in the presence of a liquid which may be either the paint vehicle, or an organic liquid miscible therewith. The powder may contain small amounts of zinc, magnesium, cadmium or silicon. Examples are given of a 95 per cent aluminium, 5 per cent zinc powder abraded in the presence of xylene, then made into a paint with either an epoxy resin or polystyrene; a 72.5 per cent aluminium, 25 per cent zinc, 2.5 per cent lead powder similarly abraded and made into a paint with an epoxy resin; and a 80 per cent aluminium, 20 per cent zinc powder similarly abraded and made into a paint with a solution of polystyrene. The epoxy resin may be either of the two types in which an amide group or an amine group brings about the hardening, and suitable hardeners are included in the compositions. Optional additives are graphite, zinc oxide, or magnesium oxide.ALSO:A metallic paint comprises a metal powder, mainly aluminium, and a cold-setting synthetic resin medium, such as an epoxy resin with an amide or amine type hardener, polyester resins and plasticized polystyrene. The aluminium which may contain zinc, cadmium or lead, or be an alloy with zinc, magnesium, silicon and/or cadmium, and is free of lubricant, is abraded before use by grinding in the medium or in a miscible solvent such as xylene, solvent naphtha, cyclohexanol, methyl iso-butyl ketone, butanol, isopropanol, toluene, diacetone alcohol and glycol monoethyl ether. Graphite, magnesium or zinc oxides may also be present.
