Abstract

549,182. Metal bronzes. TRIGGS, W. W. (Metals Disintegrating Co., Inc.). Sept. 12, 1941. No. 11709. [Class 100 (ii)] Lead, tin or zinc is formed into flaked powder by milling the metal in the presence of a leafing agent in an atmosphere containing oxygen and a greater volume of carbon dioxide or sulphur dioxide. The milling may be effected by a ball mill, the metal being charged into the mill with a liquid hydrocarbon and leafing agent, e.g. stearic acid or palmitic acid, as described in Specification 391,839. The atmosphere in the mill may comprise 4 per cent. by volume of oxygen, 50 per cent. to 80 per cent. of carbon dioxide and the remainder nitrogen. The paste product may be dried by moderate heat in air or in an inert atmosphere. Instead of wet milling, dry milling of a mixture of metal and 2 per cent. of its weight of stearic acid may be employed. The mill temperature for lead and tin may be from 70‹ to 100‹ F. and for lead, 140‹F.
