Abstract

An exothermic composition for use in the production of castings from molten metals comprises aluminium as the sole metallic reducing agent, a quantity of oxidizing agent generating oxygen at a relatively low temperature e.g. 500 DEG C. or below, and stoichiometrically insufficient to combine with all the aluminium present, a proportion of at least 0.75% by weight of a fluoride, and at least 5% by weight of a secondary oxygen-containing substance selected from the carbonates, sulphates, and phosphates of calcium, barium, strontium and magnesium and the double carbonate of calcium and magnesium. The secondary oxygen-containing substance, e.g. Dolomite, is preferably employed in a particle size exceeding 150 mesh.
