Abstract

A sintered hard composition consists of 60-93 per cent by weight of chromium and 7-40 per cent of oxide of titanium. Up to 1.5 per cent iron and some carbon may also be present as impurities. The titanium oxide may be the dioxide or a suboxide and may be partially formed in situ if the oxide powder is mixed with chromium containing oxygen and the composition then sintered. For example, a mixture of a powdered oxide of titanium containing 60-85 per cent titanium and chromium powder containing 91 per cent chromium, 7 per cent oxygen and the remainder carbon and iron may be sintered. The composition may be used for cutting tools, extrusion and drawing dies, aircraft components and furnace parts.
