Abstract
In the production of iron powder, powdered iron oxide is reduced at a temperature of at least 950 DEG C. to reduce the oxygen content to 1-10 per cent, ground to the desired grain size, and finally reduced to iron at a temperature below that of sintering. The product may be again ground to break up loosely bound aggregates of iron powder. The reducing agent in each case may be solid or gaseous carbonaceous substances and the agent in the final reduction may be finely divided high carbon pig iron. The first reduction may be at 1000-1200 DEG C. and the final reduction at a temperature below 950 DEG C.
