Abstract

Nickel oxide powder is produced by roasting a mixture of nickel powder and nickel oxide powder in air until substantially all the nickel has been converted into oxide, without substantial sintering the particles. The nickel powder may be obtained by the thermal decomposition of nickel carbonyl, and is preferably in the form of aggregates with a structure resembling cotton-wool. From 30 to 50% nickel oxide is normally present in the initial mixture. The final oxide may be milled to 1 to 1.5 micron size, and in that state it is particularly suitable for ferrite production.
