Abstract
124,979. Manchester Oxide Co., Clayton, R. H., Huebner, J., and Williams, H. E. June 27, 1918. Parchment paper; paper, treating with special materials.-In the manufacture of parchment paper, vulcanized fibre, &c., the paper is treated with solutions containing thiocyanates either in water or in a solution of another thiocyanate. The solution may contain also a salt which does not adversely affect the action of the thiocyanate, and may be acidified with acetic acid. Three examples are given. (1). The paper is passed for about 30 seconds through a solution of calcium thiocyanate heated to 130 C., and of such a strength that it boils at 157 C. (2). The paper is passed for about 15 seconds through a solution containing one part by weight of mercuric thiocyanate and two parts by weight of magnesium thiocyanate heated to 130 C. of such a strength that it boils at 145 C. (3). A solution of equal parts by weight of calcium thiocyanate and calcium chloride heated to 130 C. and of such a strength that it boils at 157 C. is used. When the solution is acidified, four per cent. by volume of glacial acetic acid is added. In each case, the paper is washed and dried in the ordinary manner. Vulcanized fibre is manufactured from the parchment paper in the same manner in which such fibre is manufactured from paper treated with sulphuric acid or zinc chloride.
