Abstract

28,581. Strohbach, E. Dec. 14. Sodium, potassium, or ammonium alum is formed by treating a solution of aluminium sulphate, which may contain iron and is preferably acidified with sulphuric acid, with excess of the alkali sulphate at 25-50‹ C. The alum meal is separated by centrifugal action and dried below 50‹ C. Sodium bisulphate may replace sodium sulphate if the aluminium sulphate solution is concentrated. Instead of an alkali sulphate, an alkali double sulphate may be used. Sodium alum may also be obtained by adding aluminium sulphate solution to a strong solution of sodium sulphate acidulated with sulphuric acid, the alkali salt being kept in excess. In making potassium or ammonium alum, the aluminium sulphate may be in excess. The sodium alum may be further purified by dissolving in water and concentrating, then rapidly cooling, adding crystals of sodium alum, and agitating, small crystals being produced.
