640,914. Detachable wheel mountings for cycles. BOERIS, A. Feb. 12, 1947, No. 4097. Convention date, Feb. 18, 1946. [Class 136. (ii)] A device for quickly fitting and removing the wheels of racing and sports bicycles comprises a rotatable. member 1 which remains permanently connected to. the bicycle frame when fitting or removing the wheel and is provided with a transverse slot which permits of the immediate withdrawal or fitting of the wheel hub, spindle 3 which is then locked through the action of a pull-rod 4 actuated by the rotatable member 1. The member is in the form, of a fly nut 1 screwed onto a threaded part 2 adjustably secured to the fork through a plate 8 and provided with a slot through which the spindle 3 may pass when the, slot registers with the fly nut slot. On screwing up the fly nut the wheel spindle 3 is locked between the two forks. A nut 9 which is locked by a set screw 10 is screwed! on the pull-rod 4 at the opposite end from the fly nut and a part 11 serves as an abutment for the spindle 3. The part 2 is mounted on a distance piece 7 slipped over the pull-rod 4 on which a thrust ball bearing 16 is fitted. As shown in Fig. 10, the fly nut 1 and part 2 may be provided with co-operating helical surfaces. In a modification shown in Fig. 15 the member 25 has its axis of oscillation at right-angles to the pull-rod and carries an eccentric 23 which works in a corresponding recess in an inner part 24. The parts 24, 25 are provided with a radial groove which is wider towards the end of the outer piece to allow of the passage of a thrust bearing 26. This modification is particularly suitable for cycle driving wheels provided with change speed gear of the type described in Specification 620,708, [Group XXIV].
