Abstract
639,659. Electron beam valves. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. April 18, 1947, No. 10412. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1944. [Class 39 (i)] An electric discharge tube in which a controlling electron beam and a controlled electron beam cross each other inside an electrode has the cathode of the controlled beam operating in the starting current range, i.e. that part of the cathode current-control voltage charac- E teristic where I=Ioe-, where E is the control Et voltage and Et the average velocity of the electrons. The current intensity of the controlling beam should preferably exceed that of the controlled beam by at least a factor of ten; this may be achieved by providing an electron multiplier between the cathode of the controlling beam and the electrode 4 in which the beams cross each other. A multiplier may be provided, as shown in the Figure, between the electrode 4 and the anode 14 of the controlled beam. The electrode 4 may be provided with partitions 5 to prevent secondary emission therefrom.
