Abstract

638,872. Knitting - machines. MELLOR, BROMLEY, & CO., Ltd., and SHORTLAND, A. May 13, 1947, No. 12846. [Class 74 (ii)] A member movable between stops of a knitting-machine is driven by another member through coupling mechanism which is releasable as the mechanism approaches a stop and locks positively on to the stop to hold the driving mechanism stationary. The coupling mechanism further unlocks from the stop upon reversal of traverse of the driving member to transmit the drive of the driving member in the reverse direction to the driven member. As described, each carrier bar is driven in one direction by one of a pair of latch members 8R, 8L, driven by the slur cock tie bar, which is adapted to engage a keeper 10 pivoted to the carrier bar. The keeper is locked in a central position by two detents 15, 16 pivoted to the carrier on either side of the keeper. At the end of each traverse of the carrier bar a lug 19, 20 on the detent, which is leading in the direction of traverse, engages a stop member 21, 22 so that the detent is rotated and frees the keeper 10 for rotation by the continued movement of the latch member 8R, 8L to disengage the latch member from the keeper. The carrier bar is retained at the end of its traverse by the lug 19, 20 engaging between a second member 24, 25 and the stop member 21, 22, and being held in position by a projection 23R, 23L on the keeper 10 engaging the detent. Towards the end of its traverse the operative latch member is lowered by a bar 30, having camways for projecting the latch members, being shogged in one direction by a quadrant 31R, 31L engaging a stop 34R, 34L to a neutral position wherein both of the latch members are in a lowered position. Further movement of the tie-bar may then engage the quadrant with a second stop 35R, 35L to further shog the cam bar 30 so that the second latch member 8L or 8R is now projected to engage the keeper in the reverse direction of movement. The latch members 8R, 8L are spaced apart and operated alternately so as to give the desired lead of the carrier over the slur cock. When it is desired to move the carrier to an inoperative position outside the needle row, alternate carrier stops 21 on the one side and the opposite intermediate stops on the other side are raised to an inoperative position so that the carrier rods are traversed until the detents 15, 16 engage a further stop 28R, 28L. At the same time the stops 35R, 35L for engaging the quadrant to project the latches in the next direction of movement are withdrawn, and the latches remain in the neutral lowered position and do not engage the carrier keeper 10 to effect a traverse of the carrier on the next draw. The distance between the latches for engaging plating carrier bars may be varied to give the necessary lead of the ground yarn carrier over the plating carrier.
