Abstract

673,947. Knitting. COLTON, L. N. (Thiede, W.). Dec. 18, 1948, No. 32784/48. Class 74 (ii). A straight-bar knitting-machine has driving means for the thread-laying and loop working mechanisms which enables the ratio between the time periods of operation per course of the thread laying or coulier mechanism and the loop working mechanism to be reduced for shorter courses of knitting. A motor 1 drives an intermediate shaft 2 from which the slurcock bar 17 and main cam-shaft 9 are driven alternately. The bar 17 is driven to right or left through one or other of bevel pinions 3, 4, secured to shaft 2 by whichever is appropriate of clutches 10, 11, a bevel gear 6, draw-cam 7, a rod 15, and a draw-lever 16. The cam-shaft 9 is driven through a clutch 12, and gears 5, 8. When one of bell-crank levers 26, 27 is on a low part of a slidable cam-bar 21, the associated clutch 10 or 11 will be engaged and the slurcock bar 17 will be traversed in one direction. Just before the slurcocks reach the edge of the knitted fabric, stops 19, 20 on the bar 21 will be adjusted by the narrowing mechanism and an abutment 18 traversed with the bar 17 will engage the appropriate one of these stops, to move the bar 21 into such a position that both clutches 10, 11 are disengaged and clutch 12 is engaged. The cam-shaft 9 now rotates but, as it completes the degree of rotation necessary for a loop drawing operation, a drum cam 25 on it moves the bar 21 to disengage the clutch 12 and engage the other of clutches 10, 11, so promoting the reverse traverse of bar 17. In a modification, Fig. 4, the slurcock bar 38 and cam-shaft 47 are driven by motors 29, 44 which are put into and out of operation singly and alternately by a switch 49 operated by a cam 48 on the shaft 47 and by a switch 43 operated by a slidable rod 42 carrying stops 40, 41 adjustable therealong by the narrowing mechanism and engageable by a projection 39 on the slurcock-bar 38. The slurcock f is advanced to the operative position by a cam 60 on a reciprocatable rod 61 and, when the rod is moved to the left, is retracted by springs 59 to allow the catch-bar to come back. The rod 61 is reciprocated by the slurcock bar 17 (or 38) but, in order to reduce the amplitude of reciprocation to that necessary, the slurcock bar is coupled to the bar 61 through a sleeve 64 slidably keyed to a shaft 63 and a helical ring 67 which engages a notch in a plate 68 on the rod 61. The shaft 63 is rotated, at the required intervals, from a cam on the main cam-shaft of the machine.
