Abstract

641,433. Knitting-machines. COTTON, Ltd., W. May 1, 1947, No. 11733. [Class 74 (ii)] The sinkers co-operating with each division of needles of a straight-bar machine are traversed by two slurcocks moving in the same direction one after the other to enable a ground yarn and a locking yarn of a ladder-resistant fabric to be knitted. A slurcock is provided for each division of the machine and is adapted to traverse two divisions in each direction of movement such that during its traverse of one division the ground yarn is knitted and during its traverse of the second division the locking varn is knitted. The slurcocks, which are connected to the slurcock tie-bar 49, are operated by two draw mechanisms working in opposite directions of motion. Each draw lever reciprocates a driving member 47, 48 which members comprise a spring-biassed bolt 50, 50<SP>1</SP> from the end of which depends a ballbearing truck 52, 52<SP>1</SP> engageable with a cleft 53, 53<SP>1</SP> formed in a block 54, 54<SP>1</SP> connected to the tie-bar 49. Actuation of one draw mechanism permits the truck 52 of the driving member 47 to engage the cleft 54 and move the tie-bar 49 operating the slurcocks to the right over one division. At the end of its traverse the driving member 47 is disconnected and the driving member 48, reciprocated by the second draw mechanism in the opposite direction to the driving member 47, is connected to the tiebar 49 by engagement of its truck 521 with the cleft 54<SP>1</SP>. Since the draw mechanisms move in opposite directions the driving member 48 now moves in the same direction as the member 47 moved when connected to the tie-bar so that the slurcocks make a further traverse to the right over a second division. During the first movement of the slurcocks the ground yarn is fed to the needles and during the change-over of the driving members 47, 48, this ground yarn is knitted into the fabric. During the second movement of the slurcocks in the same direction the locking yarn is fed to the needles and is knitted into the fabric at the end of the draw operation. The second driving member 48 is now reciprocated in the opposite direction and is maintained in engagement with the slurcock tie-bar 49 so that the slurcocks now operate in the reverse direction to the left over a division of needles during which the ground yarn is fed to the needles. At the end of the draw of the mechanism driving the member 48, the member 48 is disconnected from the tie-bar and the member 47 is again connected to it so that the slurcocks now traverse a second division to the left. Two thread carriers are provided for each division of needles and are arranged to feed a ground yarn and a locking yarn alternately. A ground yarn is fed to a division of needles followed by a locking yarn fed in the same direction along the needles. Two banks of needles may be provided in the machine. one of which knits the ground yarn and both of which co-operate to knit the locking yarn. Specifications 329,098 [Class 74 (ii)], 360,444, 460,184, 463,618, 464,018, 475,965, 481,279, 527,234 and 641,448 are referred to.
