[Class 74 (ii).] A straight bar machine for producing knitted fabrics in which each course comprises two yarns knitted alternately is provided with two needle bars 12, 13 which are movable independently of one another in the axial direction of the needles and collectively towards and away from a presser bar 14. Each needle bar is provided with needles 3 or 4 arranged at such distances apart that the needles of one bar are located in the gaps between those of the other bar. In operation, the needles of one bar are raised above the needles of the other bar so that two yarns 1, 2, supplied simultaneously to the throats 7<a>, 8<b> and 7<b>, 8<b> of double notched jack and dividing sinkers, 7, 8 are positioned below the beards of needles 3, 4 respectively. The subsequent lowering of both bars and the action of the presser bar 14 on the needles causes the yarns 1, 2 to be caught by the needles 3, 4 respectively and drawn through the previously formed loops, the unknitted yarn 2 or 1 between the operative needle being cast off to form floats in the fabric. The needle bars 12, 13 are raised alternately in knitting consecutive courses to produce a 1 /1 alternation throughout.
