Abstract

463,618. Knitting. JONES, T. H., and MILLS, R. K. June 25, 1935, Nos. 12441 and 21186. [Class 74 (ii)] Relates to the production of ladderresisting knitted fabric of the kind shown in Fig. 9, on straightbar machines, by means of bearded needles with the hooks turned back at 3. The dividing sinkers 6 are formed with extra throats 10. The lower forward ends of the jack sinkers 4 have no nebs 11 but are otherwise of somewhat similar shape to the sinkers 6. The action of the knocking-over bits is assisted by a holding- down bar 12, Fig. 11. The invention is described as applied to a Wildman type of machine, with a single head and a number of endless traversing flexible thread carrier bands 25 selected by catch elements 28. The slurcock is actuated by rotating a spiral 32. One set of cams on the shaft 17 controls the formation of normal stitches and another set the formation of the additional locking stitches. The slurcock catch bar 35 is operated through connections 36 ... 40, from a cam 33 for the course of normal loops, and from a cam 34 for the locking loops. The roller 36 is shifted from one cam to the other by selector mechanism controlled by a shaft 43. Another pair of cams 44, 45 on the shaft 17 provide for the proper vertical movement of the needle bar 26, when making normal and locked loops, as the case may be, through connections 46... 51. The roller 46 is shifted as required by an arm 53 on the shaft 43. Two other cams 54, 55 impart in-and-out movements to the needles through connections 56 ... 59, the roller 57 being shifted as required by an arm 60 mounted on a selector shaft 42. A quality cam 61 modifies the action of the cams 54, 55 by acting on an extension 69 of the arm 56 through connections 68 ... 62. For determining the quality of the locking loops, the selector shaft 42 is shifted to bring the pivoted quadrant arm 66 under a fresh set of studs 68. The holding- down bar 12 is controlled by cams 81, 82, when producing normal and locked stitches respectively. The shaft 17 is shogged when fashioning by loop transference is to be done and this brings the rollers such as 36 under control of the cams for use during fashioning. The locking courses may be suppressed at any time and ordinary fabric produced, e.g. for the welt. To improve the selvedge of the locking courses, the locking yarn carrier is given an extra traverse, amounting to one or two needle divisions. This enables the yarn to be brought under better control at the end of a locking course. The dividing sinkers at each selvedge are also provided with extra long throats 152, Fig. 29. Specifications 329,098, [Class 74 (ii)], and 422,779 are referred to in Provisional Specification 21185 /35.
