' [Class 74 (ii).] Relates to knitted fabrics of the kind wherein two plain, i.e. unribbed, webs, d, e are disposed back to back and united to each other at desired points by loops a formed by the yarn of one of the webs. A diagonal appearance and increased resistance to tearing are produced by arranging the connecting or tying loops a at alternate sinker wales of the web and alternate in position in successive courses. The fabric is preferably formed on a circular multiple feeder machine of the cylinder and dial type. The needles are so controlled that at one feeder 3 all the dial needles are projected to take the yarn 1 and knit while alternate cylinder needles are at tucking or non-clearing height and receive yarn. At the next feeder 4 all the dial needles are idle while all the cylinder needles take the yarn 2 and knit, those alternate cylinder needles which received yarn at the feeder 3 knocking over the yarn 1 without drawing it into loops. The remaining cylinder needles are raised to tucking height and receive yarn at the next feeder 5, at which the dial needles again knit. All cylinder needles receive yarn at the feeder 6 and the yarn received at the feeder 5 is knocked over by the cylinder needles holding it. The cylinder needles have butts of two lengths, the long and short butted needles alternating around the needle cylinder, and cams are provided for dividing the cylinder needles.
